Knee Pain Treatment
Knee pain:
causes, symptoms and treatment.
Knee pain can appear during walking, activity or even at rest and may be accompanied by swelling, stiffness or instability. A clinical assessment helps us understand your symptoms, movement and the factors that may be contributing to the problem.

What is it?
What is knee pain?
Knee pain refers to discomfort in or around the knee. It can start suddenly or gradually and may be mild, severe or recurring.
In some cases, it may be accompanied by swelling, stiffness, weakness, clicking or a feeling that the knee is locking.
Common signs
When does knee pain affect you?
Pain may appear during movement or even after a normal everyday activity.
While walking
Pain or a feeling of instability during normal walking.
On stairs
Pain when going up or down stairs.
During activity
Discomfort during running, gym workouts or sport.
Swelling or stiffness
Difficulty bending or straightening the knee.
Locking sensation
A feeling that the knee does not move freely.
Weakness
A feeling of instability or lack of confidence when putting weight on the leg.
Possible causes
The problem is not always only in the knee
Pain may be related to muscle strength, stability, the way you walk or how load is distributed through the body.
An increase or change in physical load
Changes in strength and physical capacity
Injuries to ligaments, the meniscus or other structures
Repeated loading during work or sport
Degenerative changes or irritation within the joint
Individual factors and how the knee tolerates load
Pain location
Left or right knee pain, pain at the side or behind the knee?
Pain may affect one knee or both knees and may be felt at the front, side or back of the knee. Location is useful information, but it is not enough on its own to identify the cause.
During assessment we look at when the pain appears, which movements change it, whether there is swelling, locking or instability and how the knee responds to load.
Physical activity
Do you need to stop being active?
Not always. In many cases, you do not need to stop activity completely.
We first need to understand the cause and then adjust the load, exercises and pace of your return to activity.
On stairs
Why can your knee hurt when going up or down stairs?
Stairs require more strength and control from the knee than walking on level ground. Pain when going up or down stairs may be related to how the knee is tolerating this additional load.
This symptom can occur with different knee problems, so pain on stairs alone does not identify a diagnosis. Assessment helps us understand what is provoking it in your case.

When knee pain is accompanied by swelling
Swelling may appear after an injury, after an unusual increase in load or alongside different knee problems. It is important to consider when it started, how long it lasts and which other symptoms are present.
If swelling is severe or sudden, the knee is very hot, or you are unable to put weight on the leg, seek medical assessment.
